when running Avon hump at cntl0 = 5 some cars will release from the hump at high speed causing a crash that results in a bad order or at least catching up to the car ahead of it such that they both stop rolling I slowed cntl0 to 2 and same problem occurred

ArtinWDM reported a similar issue a day or two ago. There was an initial report of this months ago, but it seemed to disappear (although rare cases of cars "stopping" in hump bowls isn't new, I think). Not yet sure why it appears to be more common in recent versions.
Is it that the cars immediately launch off at 40mph, or do they accelerate away from the hump as normal but fail to stop at 20mph?

In my case, the cars start out okay but then slow down to about 15mph. The next car in line catches up and all of a sudden there's a log jam. Not a big problem if you're watching all the cars being humped, but if you do something on the other side of the yard, you might come back to a mess.
Doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen.

I’ve had the same exact thing happen
They always start out at normal speed and then slow down until the next car catches up to it.
It has only happened for me when at speed 5.
Definitely not frequent at all, but it has happened a few times.

The next car in line catches up If I remember rightly, the cars should slow down to 15mph following the last switch in the hump route - vaguely simulating the effect of the group retarders - having got up to 20mph coming off the hump. Still strange that a very few cars are hitting 40mph, though.

Unfortunately, some have a brakeman riding them down the hump and slow them down too soon, thus sending the next car into them and snarling the whole process.

I've mostly had high speed cars down the ladder to the bowl. I haven't seen any slowpokes, but that may happen. I usually come back to a block of cars on the ladder but no damage.

Having had a more in depth look, I think I have a few answers and fixes:
Cars hitting 40mph - I have managed to find a bug where a humped car can accelerate despite trying to slow down, if this happens before it reaches the last switch in the hump route. Turns out standard car brakes aren't very effective if FYM still thinks that they're going down at a gradient of several percent... This matches the comments about it happening on Speed 5 - the car gets slightly above its target speed between two updates, and then failed miserably at braking.
Cars slowing unexpectedly - I've been through the code, and FYM keeps track of the expected remaining number of hump switches in the route, slowing to 15mph once no more switches are expected. If a car somehow miscounted the number of switches, it would continue at 20mph into the car ahead. I can see how this counting method might have caused problems if a switch ever got missed for some reason (corrupt data, or maybe some other issue), so I've changed it to check whether the last listed switch is the one that has now been reached.
